Celebrating Nigerian Democracy at 17

"Herald of the light at the end of the tunnel"

Nigerian Democracy may have witnessed so many ups and down in its 17 years of existence but it has also birthed so many icons and heralds of good governance and democracy. Good governance never depends upon laws, but upon the personal qualities of those who govern,
The machinery of government is always subordinate to the will of those who administer the machinery. Needless to say that a bad seed cannot yield good fruit.
The most important element of good governance therefore is the method of choosing leaders. So when the good people of Surulere Federal constituency invested their priceless votes on Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, little did they know that they were going to get more than what they had bargained for.
If a Dog cannot be crucified because he barks a lot, I do not give a hoot to trumpet the good deeds of a public office holder who has shown that altruistic representation is not a herculean task. Also, it is not in my nature to praise mere mortals however has the Yorubas would say yini yini ka le se mi, meaning lets commend the comendables in order to motivate good things yet to come.

Since he assumed the mantle of leadership in May, 2003 he has consistently worked round the clock to sustain the transformational agenda which was started by the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed led administration . In his over twelve years of representing the good people of Surulere , he has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to his avowed pledge to lead the change that will transform the entire Constituency.
Speaking on his contribution to the Nigerian democracy, we should not forget in hurry that the atmosphere of change experienced in the country today was conceived, and carefully birthed by this distinguished Nigerian,
On parliamentary democracy, he orchestrated the election of Alhaja Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representative in opposition to the rulling parties choice oh Mulikat Akande, that was the rock that the ship of the then rulling government struck and were never able to recover from and it paved way for the emergence of the President Mohammad Buhari led administration
To proof that this is not just an act of sycophancy, I will implore you told take trip to the modern Duty-free and see for yourself how democracy and parliamentary democracy is well managed can transform the lives of the electorates and the environment at large.
It is audible to the deaf and visible to the blind that the people of Surulere Federal Constituency have benefitted immensely from the dividends of progressive and representative democracy under the leadership of Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as against charade often miscalled projects in our political space. He had within the limited time executed the following verifiable projects but not limited to them.
In the words of Cicero “What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than to teach and instruct our youth”.He has over the years being instrumental to the procurement of JAMB forms to thousands of teeming youths in the constituency and provision of scholarship to indigent students in higher institutions since his election, this has been successful and hundreds of benefactors are successful in their various careers of choice.
When he saw how important improving the health of his people, he made a donation of fully equipped medical ambulances to government medical facilities to communities and hospitals in his constituency.
In his unrelenting passion for an improved health care sector, he has just recently through the auspices of his Femi Gbajabiamila Foundation in affliation with the Eko club international organized an intensive medical outreach where a free eyes screening exercise was conducted, with over 900 free eye glasses given out to correct sight problems of beneficiaries. This was inclusive of the free drugs giving to the elderly ones in the constituency and general body fitness test carried out on participant.
His Femi Gbajabiamila football tournament which millions of naira has over the years being expended on has being an avenue to catch bright talents, take away our youths from the street and foster love and unity amongst youths in the constituency.
Apart from all the above laudable projects,- hundreds of boreholes spread across the constituency, installation of street lights and grading of streets within the constituency.
In fact in carrying out his legislative duties, his intellectual prowess cannot in any way be doubted, he sponsored over 30 bills on the floor of the house the highest so far by any legislator, amongst of which
Nigerian Communications Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, 2013 to help track the usage of communication terminals by terrorists;
Central Bank of Nigeria (Amendment) Bill, 2012 to help strengthen the nation’s monetary policy;.
. Building and Public Infrastructures Protection Bill, 2011 with the objective to enable maintenance of public buildings and infrastructure and many more.
When he deliberates on issues on the floor of the house he brings back with nostalgic feelings of the good old days when our political space was saturated with politicians with poise and deep intellect, s was the outpouring of thought provoking sppech to drive home his point, which in return awaken the literary conciousness of listeners ,he is exemptedfrom the bad wagon clique of legislators who have never moved a bill on the floor of the national assembly, all they are concerned with is how much they can make from their respective committees, some lobby and sell their conscience to get the so called juicy committess . instead of staying in the hallowed chambers to legislate on people oriented bills they run from one permanent secretarys office to the other in search of contract and the way and manner the MDG projects in their various constituencyare being executed .
It is on record that he vehemently opposed the third term agenda of the then President Olusegun Obasanjo when a handful numbers of his collegues sold their conscience for “ghana must go bags” and many decided to sit on the fence. He rejected a national awards a rare incidence in our political space.
The Ikene born philosopher, Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo submits that good governance is defined in terms of adherence to accountability and transparency, laced with love, social justice, equity and fairness. It involves ability to translate these values into reality. This is the perfect example we see inHon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

We owe him huge support in this onerous task, if truly we mean to change the way things are done in ourconstiturncy. it still baffles me till tomorrow why the members of the eight legislative assembly denied him the opportunity of bthe peoples mandate to lead the green chambers, there came an opportunity for members to have a leadership that would be guided by the dictate of the pulse of the common Nigeria on the street, this opportunity was however truncated by cabals whom were all about their personal interest.
